Version: 2.8.1
1. Introduction
Welcome to Lavoix ("we," "us," or "our"). Lavoix is a sole proprietorship based in Canada that provides an AI-powered French language learning application. We are committed to protecting your personal information and your right to privacy in accordance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Quebec's Law 25 (Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector), and other applicable privacy laws.
Privacy Officer: The founder of Lavoix serves as the Privacy Officer responsible for overseeing compliance with privacy laws. Contact: support@lavoix.app Location: Canada
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our French language learning application. If you have any questions or concerns about this Privacy Policy or our practices regarding your personal information, please contact us at support@lavoix.app.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Account Information
When you register for an account with Lavoix, we collect:
- Email address - Used for account authentication (magic link verification codes) and important service communications
- Full name - Optional, used for personalization of your learning experience
- Avatar URL - If you sign in with Google, the profile picture URL Google provides
- Native language - Optional. The language you primarily speak. Currently stored for future personalization features and product analytics; not presently used to alter the content delivered to you
- French proficiency level - Your CEFR level (A0 through C1), captured during onboarding or assessment. Used to select level-appropriate lessons, drills, and conversation difficulty
- Learning goal - One of seven categories (travel, work, living, academic, social, family, general). Currently stored for future personalization features and product analytics; not presently used to alter the content delivered to you. If you select "other", we also store the free-text description you provide, held under the same terms
- Account settings - Daily learning goal in minutes and word-by-word translation preference
A note on optional fields: Some onboarding fields are skippable, and several are stored for future personalization features that we have not yet built. Where this is the case it is noted above. We will update this policy if and when we begin using such data to materially alter your experience.
Notification Preferences
Separately from the above, we store your opt-in choices for:
- Marketing and product update emails (default: opt-out; you must actively enable this in Settings to receive marketing emails)
- Learning reminders and daily tips (default: opt-in; you can disable this in Settings at any time)
You can update these preferences at any time in your account Settings.
Consent Audit Trail
For GDPR and other privacy-law compliance, we record:
- Timestamp of when you accepted our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy
- Version number of the Terms / Privacy Policy you accepted (e.g.
2.5.2) - Method by which consent was provided (one of: implicit acceptance via continued use of the Service after a notification banner about an updated policy, acceptance via the Google Sign-In flow, or affirmative acceptance of a blocking modal shown during a major-version update)
This audit trail exists solely to demonstrate compliance with consent-based privacy laws and is not used for marketing or personalization.
Billing Identifiers
If you subscribe to a paid plan, we store:
- Stripe customer ID - An identifier linking your Lavoix account to your Stripe customer record. We do not store payment card numbers (Stripe handles those directly; see Section 4 Subprocessor table)
- Subscription status and plan - Whether you have an active subscription and which plan
- Monthly speaking-time allocation - Your subscription's monthly conversation-minute limit, plus any administrator-configured overrides
Engagement Metrics
To power streak tracking, daily goals, and adaptive features, we store:
- Current streak (consecutive practice days), longest streak, and last activity date
- Whether you have completed the initial proficiency assessment, and when the most recent assessment was taken
Google Sign-In (OAuth)
If you choose to sign in using Google, we receive the following information from Google:
- Email address - For account creation and authentication
- Name - For personalization
- Profile picture - Provided by Google as part of sign-in
We use Google Sign-In only for authentication purposes. Your Google user data is never sold, shared with third parties for advertising, or used for any purpose other than providing the Lavoix service. Our use of Google user data complies with the Google API Services User Data Policy.
2.2 Learning Data
We collect data generated through your use of Lavoix:
- Learning progress - Lessons completed, proficiency assessments, skill progression
- Conversation transcripts - Text transcripts of your French conversation practice sessions with our AI tutor, Léah
- Grammar corrections - Your responses to grammar drills and the corrections provided
- Flashcards - Cards you create or generate, along with review history and spaced repetition data
- Performance analytics - Accuracy rates, time spent, areas of difficulty
Nature of Conversation Data: As part of natural French conversation practice, our AI tutor Léah asks you personal questions (such as where you are from, your daily activities, your family, and your interests) to simulate authentic conversational scenarios. This is a core part of the language learning experience. Your responses to these questions are stored as conversation transcripts as described above. We do not extract, structure, or separately store personal details mentioned in your conversations: they remain within the transcript text, which you can view and delete at any time.
Important: Audio recordings are NOT stored by Lavoix. See Section 5 for detailed information about voice data handling.
2.3 Automatically Collected Information
When you use Lavoix, we automatically collect:
- Device information - Browser type, operating system, device identifiers, screen resolution
- Log data - IP address, access times, pages viewed, referring URLs, actions taken
- Error data - Technical errors encountered during your use of the Service (used for debugging and service improvement; personally identifiable information is filtered/redacted)

4. Third-Party Subprocessors
We share data with trusted third-party vendors who help us operate Lavoix. The table below is the complete list of subprocessors that may process your personal data, with the purpose of processing, location, and a link to each provider's privacy policy.
We update this table when we add, remove, or change subprocessors, and reflect material changes in the version of this policy (see Section 15: Changes to This Privacy Policy). Where available, we maintain Data Processing Agreements (DPAs) or equivalent contractual protections with providers that process personal data, and we select providers with strong privacy and security practices.
Current commitments based on provider terms as of the policy date:
- As of the policy date, none of our AI providers' published terms permit using customer API data to train their models. Provider terms can change without prior notice. We monitor changes periodically and update this policy when we become aware of material changes, but we cannot guarantee real-time accuracy of third-party terms.
- Audio is never stored by Lavoix. Audio streams are processed in real-time by speech-to-text and text-to-speech providers, then discarded. See Section 5 for the audio data flow in detail.
- As of the policy date, the published retention terms of our key providers are: OpenAI retains API data for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring; xAI retains API data for up to 30 days, then automatically deletes it; OpenRouter and Google Cloud Vertex AI (accessed via OpenRouter) operate under a Zero Data Retention contract, so prompt data is not retained. Other providers' retention is governed by their respective privacy policies (linked below) and may change without our notice.
- Stripe handles all payment card data. Lavoix never stores credit card numbers.

Note on accuracy: Subprocessor information in the table above reflects each provider's published terms and our review at the time of policy update. Provider terms may change between policy updates; we are not responsible for differences between published terms and a provider's actual practices, except to the extent applicable data protection law imposes a higher standard.
4.1 Service Provider Changes
We may add, remove, or change third-party subprocessors at any time to improve our Service. Material changes to our data practices will be reflected in updates to this Privacy Policy. We are not obligated to notify users individually of routine subprocessor changes that do not materially affect how your data is processed.
5. Voice and Audio Data Processing
This section provides detailed information about how voice data is handled in Lavoix's conversation features.
5.1 How Voice Conversations Work
When you speak with Léah, our AI tutor:
- Audio is streamed in real-time to our speech-to-text provider
- Audio is converted to text (transcription)
- Only the text transcript is stored by Lavoix
- Audio is NOT stored by Lavoix at any point
While we engineer this flow so that audio is never stored on Lavoix-controlled systems, we cannot control how third-party subprocessors process audio in transit. Their handling is governed by their respective privacy policies (see Section 4).
5.2 Third-Party Provider Data Handling
Audio is processed by the speech-to-text and text-to-speech providers listed in Section 4 (Third-Party Subprocessors). Each provider's handling of audio is governed by their own privacy policy, linked in that table.
Key point: Lavoix does NOT store your audio. We only store the resulting text transcripts. How third-party providers handle audio during processing is subject to their own policies.
5.3 What We Store
| Data Type | Stored by Lavoix? | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Audio recordings | No | N/A |
| Text transcripts | Yes | Learning history, progress tracking |
| Grammar corrections | Yes | Educational feedback, improvement tracking |
| Conversation metadata | Yes | Session timestamps, duration |
5.4 Deleting Your Conversation Data
You can delete individual conversation sessions directly from the app. Deleting a conversation permanently removes the session and all associated data from our database, including:
- All messages (both your messages and Léah's responses)
- All grammar corrections from that session
- Session metadata (timestamps, duration)
Your overall learning progress (lesson progress, scenario completions, grammar pattern mastery, and aggregated statistics) is not affected by deleting individual conversations.
Flashcards created during a conversation are retained separately for your continued learning, even if you delete the conversation they originated from. You can delete individual flashcards independently.
You can also delete your entire account from Settings in the app, which removes all conversation data. Alternatively, contact support@lavoix.app and we will process your request within 30 days.
6. Data Retention
| Data Type | Retention Period | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Account data | While account is active | Deleted 30 days after account deletion |
| Conversation transcripts | User-controlled, default 30 days | Automatically deleted after the retention period set in your Settings (between 7 and 365 days). You can also delete individual conversations from Settings at any time, or delete all conversation data by deleting your account |
| Learning progress | While account is active | Deleted with account |
| Aggregate usage metrics | Retained while account is active | After a transcript is deleted, anonymized counts (number of conversations, total speaking minutes, messages exchanged, corrections received) are kept on your profile so progress dashboards remain accurate. These counts cannot be used to reconstruct the deleted content. |
| Analytics data | Aggregated/anonymized | Individual data not retained long-term |
| Error logs | Server-side only | PII filtered before collection |
Account Deletion: When you delete your account, all personal data is immediately removed from our database. Data held by third-party subprocessors (see Section 4) is subject to their respective published retention policies, which range from "not retained" to up to 30 days for our largest providers as of the policy date. We cannot guarantee the timeline of third-party deletion. Some anonymized, aggregated data may be retained for service improvement.
